CHAPTER 35

The morning light filtered through the curtains, though for once Rhone felt no inclination to launch out of bed and shut them.

Careful not to disturb Lyria, still fast asleep in his arms, he reached up to brush a strand of hair from her face. Her crisp scent, like a fresh rain, enveloped him as he nuzzled her neck, filling him with a peace he hadn’t felt in years.

Rhone knew she had secrets. Some that perhaps he would never know, but if she was willing to give him something, anything, that would be enough for the time he had left.

It had been too long since he had held a woman in his arms, longer still since he had held one that made him feel as alive as Lyria did. And maybe it was selfish of him to want her, to need her, the way he did, when he knew he didn’t Godsdamned deserve her.

When she woke, he would have to explain everything to her. Even if what she offered him was only physical, she should know the full extent of the curse cast upon him. Eilena had told him over and over that Lyria wouldn’t blame him for keeping it a secret, but the thought of seeing the disgust on her face, the contempt, was enough for him to bite his words.

There was no escaping it now, though, not when she was in here, and would undoubtedly see the proof of his lies. So, he pulled her closer, enjoying their last few moments together.

Lyria stirred, her nightdress riding up enough that her bare legs brushed against his before she settled back into sleep with a sigh. He wondered again what had sent her fleeing from the library after they kissed.

The way she had opened for him, how her body had reacted, he knew she enjoyed it as much as he had. She wouldn’t have come to him last night, or offered herself to him, if she hadn’t.

It was with that thought, before he could question his own judgement, that he reached down, idly stroking her silken thigh. With a feather-soft touch, he continued to trace lazy circles lower and lower, before he moved his hand to her other leg, making his way back up. Rhone paused as his fingers brushed a leather strap, following it until he felt the sheathed dagger it held in place.

“You wicked little thing,” he murmured into her ear, a smile tugging at his lips. He traced his way back over her hips, up her side, before reaching up to graze the bottom of the scar on her left cheek.

He had never thought to ask if whoever had given it to her was dead now. Knowing Lyria, they were in shreds, but if not? If Rhone ever got his hands on the bastard, they would wish they had never laid eyes on her.

Dropping his hand back beneath the blankets, he swirled his fingers around her navel and across her stomach.

“You’re going to get us both in trouble if you keep this up,” Lyria said, eyes clenched shut.
